Survivor Soul Stroll 2018

The CoopGroup Helps Raise Awareness for Breast Cancer

This year I have the distinct honor and pleasure of being a Stage Sponsor for Radio One’s 2nd Annual Survivor Soul Stroll 5K Breast Cancer Walk. The story behind my involvement in the fight against cancer begins with the passing of my Dad from prostate cancer in 2014, which lead to my Champion sponsorship of the ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk in 2017. I am no stranger to this disease, as I have had other family members who have suffered. However, none were as close as the departure of my Dad. Consequently, I decided to be an active participant in this battle rather than a spectator on the sidelines. I pay homage to my Dad by helping others. As traumatizing as his death has been, I have no regrets. Each time I assist in this fight against cancer, I take another step towards healing. God makes no mistakes. So if it takes the sacrifice of my Dad to get me involved, then I am fulfilling one of my life's purposes.

Too often recognition is only paid when someone dies. Praise to the survivors of this illness should be provided equally. Henceforth, my Stage Sponsorship of the 2nd Annual Survivor Soul Stroll 5K Breast Cancer Walk serves a multitude of purposes. It gives me an opportunity to salute those who have been victors in their fight with cancer and pay tribute to another person who is just as dear to me as my Dad - my Mom. She has defeated her battle with cancer in two Thrilla in Manilla style fights. After going into remission in 1997, her cancer returned 11 years later in 2008 and took another KO. My mom has been in remission for 10 years to date. Now, neither of those forms of cancer attacked the breast, but why should it matter? Cancer is cancer, and I have decided to wage a lifetime war against this disease.

So please join me, Radio One, and all five of its stations (Magic 95.9, 92Q, WOLB 1010, Spirit 1400, and Praise 106.1) in the fight against breast cancer at the 2nd Annual Survivor Soul Stroll 5k Breast Cancer Walk! A portion of each walker's registration fee will be donated to the Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center to help them in their fight against this insufferable disease. In addition, walkers and teams are encouraged to raise additional funds, 100% of which will go to a major charity.

ZERO Prostate Cancer 2017

Team Melvin's Crusaders

In 2014, my dad, Melvin Cooper, passed away as a result of prostate cancer. In honor of my father, I was a proud Champion sponsor of the 2017 ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk on September 24th at Towson University.

Whether through donations of time or money, thank you to the donors who helped Team Melvin's Crusaders raise over $3,000 to support this cause and made the race day successful! Your donations provide much needed funds for research, education and awareness, and patient assistance for prostate cancer patients in the local community. One in eight fathers, sons, husbands, brothers, partners, and friends will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, including 3,400 men in Maryland this year alone.
